Also known as the Miami 5: In December, 2002, five Cubans were convicted ofespionage in Miami. They were [from the bottom left in the picture at left and continuing clockwise] René González, Fernando González, Gerardo Hernández, Ramón Labanino, and Antonio Guerrero. All were given prison sentences of 15 years to life. According to the Cuban government, the five indeed were agents of Cuba that were sent to Miami to infiltrate the anti-Castro groups, what combined are known as the "Miami Mafia", that were believed to have been responsible for "terrorist" bombings in Cuba in the late 1990s. Regardless, the five are now scattered across the U.S. in the federal penitentiary system. Their images are everywhere in Cuba, especially in the tourist hotels and sites, and their story is that of sacrifice. They sacrificed their freedom in order to give Cubans freedom from the "Miami Mafia." In the city and in the countryside, it is hard to pass a day in Cuba without being reminded of the Five Heroes, as witnessed in the following images.
