Personality Cult: The Cuban Cult of Personality

In Cuba, the government uses the "cult of personality" to sell its version of socialism to the Cuban people on a daily basis. Here, the "cult of personality" is defined loosely as the overwhelming public display of the image, biography, philosophy and character traits of individuals that have had a notable impact on Cuban history. Fidel Castro fuses these individuals to his socialist agenda in a propaganda masterpiece that leads many Cubans to not only identify with the individuals but also the socialist state. In short, Castro aims to get Cubans to identify with the sacrifice: the sacrifice that historic Cubans have made with their blood and the sacrifice that the Castro regime requires to justify food shortages, the lack of political freedom, and other unsavory things about current day Cuba. Four of these personality cults are: José Martí, Che Guevara, Antonio Maceo and the Five Heroes of the Revolution.
